Interesting that Dallas called Ottawa wanting to give them Jason Spezza. Ottawa did not answer the call. Not a lot of talk about how wise the Sens were to move on a few years ago.

That's an Eklund rumor so let's take it with a grain of salt. Generally, teams aren't cold-calling other teams trying to move players.

That said, Spezza doesn't fit into any system, let alone a structured one like Boucher's.

They were smart to "move on"... but got little to nothing in return when he had more value at the time.
The NTC screwed the Sens in the end as they likely could have gotten more elsewhere.
Until this season he was still being used heavily; but the new system in place has dropped him down the depth chart in Big D.

teams just need to learn to walk away as the Sens did in the Spezza deal. they should have done the same with Bobby Ryan.

Nashville made a very strong move in trading Weber for Subban. age difference is huge.

teams should manage on a 3 or 4 year profile except for their super star or what the NBA calls franchise player. Once a guy hits 28 he is clearly pasr peak performance and teams should manage down in those situations.

Not against the importance of veteran players on a roster. But, players should not be paid for past performance. McDavid is a great contract. His next contract, nine years from now, should be for less money.

Big problem for the sens is that their core is near or past 28... Even Duchene is turning 27 soon. Sens should have avoided Phaneuf.

Taking on Phaneuf was the price the Sens had to pay to get rid of their three worst players (Cowan, Michalek, Greening).

Horrible thought process. Leafs got rid of them all pretty easy. Took nothing on to do it.

Stone, 13th goal in 18 games - only Kucherov has more.

Sign this guy 8 years already.

Phaneuf is a solid 2nd pairing D-man
If he had a 5m cap hit, I'd be over with it

Yes, 7m is a cap ticket, but I'd be more concerned about Ryan. With Phaneuf sens got rid of a lot of $ which matters to a franchise like Ottawa

Hockey Gods played us pretty ugly today.

Boucher must be smoking between his ears over the weak goal tending. Condon looked pretty bad on the 2nd and 3rd goals.

This isn't game of the thrones.... no hockey gods b.s.

Agree Condon looked like sh t .... and karlsson needs to step his game back up to where he can bring it to

also loosing methot is underrated here - duchene looks average

Duchene got 5 shots on goal again, at least hes shooting, only a mater of time before they start going in, the goltending has been whats sinking this team....they cant stop beach balls right now.

If your talking about Condon yes, but goal scoring & the PP is the problem for me

Anderson made great saves last game against the Pens - it was only 2-1 (empty net goal)

Simple fact: Ryan and Duchene at 13.25 m against the cap - they have to produce!

What's going on with the Sens this year? Has the coach lost the room.

Couldn't they have just have paid Greening, Michalek, Cowen et al 1 more year and avoid the Phaneuf fiasco altogether? They only had 1 year remaining.

getting Phaneuf fixed multiple issues
- Got rid of 3 bad contracts
- Got rid of lots of salary which was higher then the cap for all 3 of them
- opened up roster spots for younger players to start developing
- Phaneuf filled up nicely a top 4 D that had been missing in Ottawa for years

Edit: ...and Condon sucks this year...

This is the truth - when phaneuf was traded for, this team didn't have chabot and a lot of these other D-men. Even ceci wasn't at the top of his game yet. So bringing in Phaneuf was a huge step and IMO was a big factor in this team's run last season.

Everyone knew the cap would get tight, but again, if the Sens could release either phanuef or ryan's contract, I think ryan's is the one you go with

Currently still in 3rd in Atlantic. Some games in hand. Not bad for a team that is 8-10. Relax it will get back on the tracjs
